At Dean Business & Tax Law, we do law better. Our goal is to not only provide top notch legal services to our clients but remove as much friction as possible in the process. We have all heard the horror stories of trying to engage legal services and the challenges clients face. We have seen and experienced them ourselves, so we do all we can to provide legal services differently – and better.

And what does that look like? We work with businesses throughout Idaho, Ohio, and Utah to recognize and serve their legal needs. We work proactively with clients – both individuals and businesses – to plan ahead, recognize and mitigate risks, and address challenges head-on when they arise. In doing this, we provide a concierge-level service to our clients and seek to make the process of obtaining legal services as simple and seamless as possible. We respond to phone calls and emails, we are transparent and up-front about our pricing, and we communicate with clients clearly and timely. To us, this seems like common sense. But in our experience, it’s a level of service that not all attorneys and firms offer.

Where We Are

With offices located in Boise, Idaho; NE Ohio; and the Silicone Slopes of Utah, we seek to be where our clients are. That is why we continue to have a number of physical offices in a world where many have turned to virtual only. In addition to these physical offices, we have helped clients on Federal tax issues throughout the country.

Just as our clients’ businesses must respond to an ever-changing business and legal environment, we recognize the importance of doing the same in serving our clients.

Our History

Jacob Dean is the Founder & Managing Partner of the Firm. He is an experienced business and tax lawyer, licensed in Idaho, Ohio, and Utah. He has extensive experience helping individuals and businesses navigate the complexities of the business and tax worlds. He has a depth of experience in a number of different matters, but focuses his practice on helping clients connect the dots in their businesses. His breadth of experience in the business and tax worlds is something he prides himself in. And he works hard to continue to expand that experience on a daily basis.

Jacob started his career in-house at a Fortune 100 company, where he worked in the corporate tax department. Following that experience, he moved his family to the Washington, DC area. There he clerked for a judge on the U.S. Tax Court and at a D.C.-based tax boutique. During that time, he attended Georgetown University and obtained an LL.M. in tax law.

Following his time in D.C., he worked as an associate and partner at a regional law firm. He then worked in-house for a commercial real estate development firm. Following a move to Idaho, he launched Dean Business & Tax Law to do things differently and better. But the ultimate goal remains — to provide clients with a top-tier legal service.

How We Do It

One of the primary ways we do law better is through flat-fee billing. The last thing a business owner wants from their lawyer is a surprise bill. We have all the conversations up front to determine the scope of services and pricing. As such, we can be in sync with our clients. And we have found that in doing so, we are able to provide better service to our clients. Our business or tax clients are unafraid to pick up the phone and call when they are not worried about the clock ticking and the bill going up. Better information helps us do our job better. And clients get the peace of mind that the lines of communication are open.

Why We’re Different

Our job is to make your life running a business easier. As we often say, we will either know the answer, find you the answer, or connect you with another attorney if needed to get you an answer. We do not have any pretense in our practice. Our goal is simply to provide white-glove service to businesses throughout Idaho, Ohio, and Utah.

We do not have a volume practice. Meaning, we look carefully to partner with clients whose vision and values align with ours. And we seek to deliver those clients exceptional service. We are not, and do not seek to be, everyone’s attorney. Trying to juggle too many clients can lead to poor service, in our experience. Rather, we value every client and seek to build a long-term, valuable relationship.

We pride ourselves in developing meaningful relationships with clients and understanding the needs of their personal and professional lives. Jacob started the firm with an eye towards providing exceptional service to his clients. And to do so, he recognized the need meet business owners where they were. As our team has grown, the firm retains the fundamental belief that legal counsel – whether for an individual or business – should be a collaborative member of the team. We should make our clients’ lives easier, not harder.
