About the Firm
Background
Jacob Dean, Founder & Managing Partner of the Firm, is an experienced business and tax lawyer licensed in Idaho, Ohio, and Utah. He helps individuals and businesses navigate complex business and tax landscapes. With a depth of experience in the various challenges his clients face, he focuses on connecting the dots for clients in their business and personal lives. One of the most valuable things he brings to his practice is his breadth of experience in the business and tax worlds. And he works continuously to expand it daily.
Jacob’s career has taken him around the country and world. He began in-house at a Fortune 100 company before moving his family to Washington, DC. There, he clerked for a U.S. Tax Court judge before working as an associate at a D.C.-based tax boutique firm. While working full-time, he attended Georgetown University Law Center part-time, earning an LL.M. in tax law as a Graduate Tax Scholar. After D.C., he served as an associate and partner at a regional Ohio law firm, then in-house for a commercial real estate development firm.
Launch of the Firm
Following a move to Idaho, Jacob determined to build something of his own. After much discussion with family, friends, and mentors, he launched Dean Business & Tax Law in 2025. Building the firm from the ground up, the firm continued to grow throughout 2025. And now moving into 2026, the firm has continued to grow and evolve – both in the practice areas served and the team members that are a part of the firm.
Vision for the Firm
In launching Dean Business & Tax Law, Jacob envisioned doing things differently and better. Having experienced legal engagement as both client and service provider, he identified many opportunities to improve that relationship and paradigm. He founded the firm to provide exceptional service, meeting business owners where they are, rather than dictating instructions. He believes a business’s legal counsel should be a collaborative team member, and his role as an attorney is not just to counsel, but to teach clients the reasoning behind his advice. And that vision is shared by all the members of the firm as it continues to grow and service business owners and individuals.
A key part of this vision for the firm is continuing to build a team to support clients’ needs. When asked about “hanging his own shingle,” an old phrase for lawyers going solo, Jacob often corrects them, stating, “no, I’m building my own firm.” He understands the importance of a team and is actively working to build the firm’s team out further. The firm has already grown in its brief existence and anticipates continued growth to best meet client needs.
Ultimately, legal services are not new. Thousands of firms around the country and globe have been providing them for centuries. But a lightbulb moment for Jacob early in the firm’s life is the recognition that breakthroughs often come simply from doing something hundreds or thousands of other people have done or do – better. Whether it is telling a story or running a business, we need not always seek out the novel. And from this our vision and motto was born: We do law better.
